How are we going to fight for global solutions to the global problems of inequality and the climate crisis?
Our strategy is to focus on the money. Huge amounts of money in the form of stimulus funds are being transferred from financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund to governments to be used as stimulus packages to reignite their economies.
Our aim is to target these financial institutions to put conditions on packages for things like green jobs, green infrastructure, emission reductions, strengthening of social safety nets and public services etc. We also need to make sure that vulnerable countries are not being exploited and driven into huge amounts of debt. We need equitable lending terms and more support for the global south.
Other countries are raising these funds internally - for these countries we must target the government itself. Large regional and international institutions such as the IMF also help with policy recommendations. So even if they are not supplying the funds they still have influence.
To ensure an equitable sustainable recovery we must centre frontline Communities, increase public consultation and have transparent allocation of funds.
We have an opportunity to act now and create a more equitable sustainable world.
